Maui and the Sun
During Maori language week, we read many different versions of Maui and the Sun. We also watched different you tube clips. The children then wrote their own version and produced a piece of art work to go with it.
They did an amazing job.

Maui was angry because the
sun was going too fast!
The brothers braided flax
to make ropes then the brothers set off to catch the sun. When the brothers got
to where the sun wakes up, the flames got over them. Maui shouted, “Now!”
The brothers got the ropes
and they caught the sun. Maui bet the sun with the magic jawbone.
The sun said, “Stop! Stop!
Can’t you see I’m almost dead?”
Maui said, “Let the sun
go. The sun won’t move so fast anymore.”
Now Maui and his people
can eat and fish and hunt.

Maui wanted to slow the
sun down. So Maui and his brothers made flax ropes to catch the sun. They went
onto where the sun rose.
When Ra rose, they threw
the ropes.
“Pull, don’t let go!” said
Maui.
He hit Ra with the magic
jawbone.
“Stop! Stop!” said Ra
“Let him go,” said Maui
Then they had plenty of
time to do their jobs.

Maui and his four brothers
couldn’t fish or eat because the sun was moving too fast. Maui was angry! Ra -
the sun was too fast!
So Maui and his other
brothers made flax ropes and they captured the sun. They made the sun promise
to move more slowly so the days could be longer.
Maui and his brothers
could finish their jobs before Ra went down.

Maui was angry because he
couldn’t eat, hunt and fish. Maui decided to catch the sun. They made flax
ropes to catch the sun then they set off to find the hole where the sun rises.
They built a wall of clay.
They threw the ropes over the wall of clay then Maui told his brothers this –
“When I say now, grab the ropes and don’t let go!”
When the sun went over the
rivers and the mountains, Maui said “Now!”
Maui’s brothers pulled the
ropes then Maui started to beat the sun again and again. The brothers let the
ropes go.
Now Maui and his people
have time to do their jobs in the light of the sun.

and his brothers could not eat, hunt and fish.
Maui decided to catch Ra –
the sun, so they made ropes out of flax. When they were finished, Maui and his
brothers found where the sun rises. When they found where the sun rises they
made a wall.
Maui said, “When I say,
throw your ropes!”
When they got Ra, Ra said,
“Let me go!”
Maui said, “ Let Ra go.”
Now Maui and his people
have plenty of time to hunt and fish.

sun was too fast. He couldn’t do his jobs.
“We will make flax ropes
to catch the sun.”
He went to find the hole
of the sun and when they were there the sun was sleeping. When the sun was
awake, Maui hid and then he said, “Now!” His brothers then pulled.
Maui hit Ra! The sun said,
“Let me go. I will promise to be good.”
Maui said, “Let go of the
ropes.”
The sun went slowly.

jobs because the sun was moving too fast.
Ra, the sun, raced across
the sky then went down.
Maui and his brothers made
a wall of earth to hide behind.
When the sun started to
rise, Maui said “Now!” His brothers got up and grabbed the flax ropes and threw
the flax ropes around the flames of the sun.
“Stop! Stop! Let me go!”
